For example, in my area I cannot spec trusses - they have to be engineered by the truss company, even though I use the exact same chart that the engineer uses to lay out the webs and gussets.
I know several "Draftsmen" who are great at CAD, but would be unable to complete a whole project like this on their own.ĭepending on where you live, the hard stuff is not creating the drawings, but the engineering required in some areas. You need someone with the experience to look at what you have created, and make sure it's complete. Are there any layman that have actually completed everything for permitting by themselves using Home Designer Pro? but I don't want to invest so much more time doing that just to find out that it still needs the expertise of a draftsman. I figure I could use the program to complete the electrical, foundation plan, elevations, etc. Do I need to hire a draftsman? I have the floor plan that I've been showing to builders, as well as 3D rendered photos, and the builders are telling me to hire a draftsman to finish up the plans for permitting. Now that I have completely designed the house. But it has been invaluable in designing the home and being able to walk through it and actually get that presence of space. I've been out of work which is the only reason I've had the time to invest in learning the program.

There are quite a few things that make Pro worth it.
I bought Home Designer Suit and after using it for a couple months I upgraded to Home Designer Pro. I just want to understand how much value any preliminary designs I come up with would actually have, or if the professionals would just pat me on the head and say "nice try".

I understand that spending $100 on software DOES NOT replace the need for professionals like architects and engineers in the future. My question is, if I bought something like Home Designer Suite, what is it really capable of? Is this just a visualization tool or can it actually do things like determine if the design could be structurally sound? I want to be clear though. One idea I had was to start playing around with some software to come up with my design and see what a self designed home would actually look like. I'm very worried that my list of wants will quickly cause me to realize that I really can't afford this yet. Lately, there have been some circumstances pushing me towards doing this sooner than I had planned. I've always wanted to build my own home (I'd hire a builder).
